El Salvador - Diabetes Association of El Salvador (ASADI)

The Project
The organization provides diabetic children born into poverty with the medical attention and education they need. The foundation improves the lives hundreds of children. One hundred percent of all proceeds donated to ASADI go to the purchase of insulin and medical supplies.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that is marked by elevated blood sugar levels and caused by the body’s inability to produce insulin or resistance to insulin. The consequences of lack of treatment are very serious: blindness, renal failure, cardiovascular disease & heart failure, amputations of extremities (toes, feet, hands due to poor circulation) and death. If property treated, Diabetes is a managed condition. Diabetes is easily treated by taking insulin as prescribed, eating a healthy balanced diet, measuring blood sugar levels several times a day and getting proper exercise.

The Children
The 100 children in the program come from families that do not quality for basic medical insurance and therefore cannot afford their treatment. Depending on the severity of their diabetes, medical costs to treat a child can be as high as $100 per month and do not include medical visits or education for their family on how to manage the disease. In order to assure the child’s survival, families with diabetic children must be taught about acceptance, proper nutrition and how to properly administer treatment.

Accomplishments
the children are receiving medical assistance to treat their diabetes and they are being educated. They also learned more about being responsible with their health and how to strengthen themselves emotionally to face the challenges of their condition and environment. Our contribution provides for assistance in medical care, transportation assistance to children and their families that need to get to the various educational activities and annual Christmas gifts.
