SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO

The Project
Casa de Niño Madre Gerina receives 220 children, newborns to 15 years of age, whose basic needs are not met. Manos del Sur has teamed up with FIDEC, a U.S.-based non-profit organization, to provide the home with a preventive health care program complemented by a nutrition program, after school activities, periodical medical check-ups and health care education for the families.

Location: Santiago del Estero, Argentina

Start date: July 2003

The Children
The children come from extremely poor families who do not have health insurance or the education to make use of available medical care therefore lacking early age preventive health care. Their parents are frequently unemployed and they live in extremely poor conditions. The only meals they get are the ones they receive at the center.

Accomplishments
A team of specialists evaluated all the children with special emphasis on their health and nutrition condition and on the status of their immunizations. We implemented a nutritional program, updated all the immunizations and treated all pre existent illnesses. The kitchen and dining room were outfitted with an industrial range, a refrigerator, water heater, dishes, pots and pans and other utensils.
