The commercials feature funny spots on how we all waste time at work, therefore part of our salary is not so difficult to earn, yet $20 a month can change the life of a child in Latin America. What can the future be of a child born to a mother who is in prison? Such was the reality of the children of the project in Ecuador Manos del Sur supports. From the time they took their first breath, they lived with their mothers behind bars without proper love and care. All of these children suffered from deplorable living conditions, isolation, malnutrition and many times abuse. Fundación Jesus Divino Preso took them out of this situation by creating a community of eight safe-houses run by eight “aunts” who take care of these 40 children 24 hours a day. They live in a home, receive proper nourishment, education and medical attention and they have other children to play with. Manos del Sur supports the project through our Integral Assistance Program (IAP) which provides medical, nutrition, and educational support. The importance of health is undeniable. Health is a human right that eludes too many children living in Latin American countries. This is why Manos del Sur has joined forces with FIDEC (Fighting Infectious Diseases in Emerging Countries), a non-profit Miami based organization. According to Doctor Carlos Carabajal, Chief of Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital in Santiago del Estero and responsible for the project “Casa Madre Gerina”, preventive medicine at a young age greatly reduces the number of children who develop life-altering illnesses and allows children to develop physically and mentally. He added that investing in children’s health saves funds in the future by avoiding other more serious consequences that come from untreated chronic illnesses and lack of nutrition and health. Prevention, regular check-ups, vaccines, and treatment for infections go hand-in-hand with access to clean water and nutrition. Good health leads to healthy children who go to school, have fun, participate in sports and who will one day contribute to the community. Healthy kids have the hope of a healthy future.
