• The rights of Colombia’s women and children remain in constant threat as a result of four decades of armed conflict between the government and drug-trafficking militias. There is limited access to medical care, education and other social services in rural areas.

• Violence has internally displaced approximately 3 million people in the past 15 years, 75 percent of which were women and children. In 2004, more than a quarter million people were forced to leave their homes. These displaced populations have little access to safe water and basic health and educational services.

• Anemia affects one third of all children. 14 percent of children under age five suffer from stunted growth and 7 percent of newborns have low birth weight.

• The highest rates of poverty and exposure to armed conflict are found among Native American and Afro-Colombian populations.

• Domestic violence rates are alarmingly high, with almost 40 percent of women being battered by their male companions.
