Summer Experience

In 2008, some high school students approached us with the idea of traveling to one of our projects to work during the summer. After long considerations we decided to give it a try and take them to Escuela Pan y Amor in Managua, Nicaragua, to work for a week during the summer.

The trip was a success, and an incredibly enriching experience for both the volunteers and the children at the school, so we have repeated the trips every year since then. Most of the volunteers returned several times or sent their siblings. As we ran out of space for new volunteers and our waiting list kept growing, in 2012 we added another trip in August, which was a huge success.

During the week they spend at the school, the volunteers share the children's every day life, providing them one on one tutoring, playing with them, doing arts and crafts projects and science experiments. They also visit their homes and organize soccer tournaments and Olympics.

Three adults and two coordinators (past volunteers) travel with the volunteers every trip.

In January 2015 we will open registration for next year's trip. As in the past, we will be taking volunteers entering 10th, 11th and 12th grade.

ALL SUMMER VOLUNTEERS HAVE TO COMPLETE 6 VOLUNTEER HOURS WITH MANOS DEL SUR BEFORE THE TRIP FOR THE APPLICATION TO BE COMPLETE AND ACCEPTED.
