Guatemala - Asociacion Futuro Vivo

The organization

This center was founded in 1999 by the religious community Carmelitas de Enseñanza and is located in Concepcion Las Lomas, Guatemala . It offers the community the possibility of a future: schooling, adequate nutrition, adult alphabetization, integral family formation, medical attention, programs to prevent social risk in young people. Futuro Vivo considers that education is the best road to promote those who have never had an opportunity.

Some of its programs are:
  • Education: preschool and primary education, providing all the necessary school supplies, psychological and educational support, and recreational activities.
  • Nutrition: provide daily breakfast and lunch to students, nutrition education for the children's families, participation of the parent's in the meal preparation.
  • Health: weekly pediatric consultation, basic special services (dentist, immunization, clinical analysis)
  • Family activities: monthly meeting with parents to coordinate and organize activities, home visits, workshops (child psychology, nutrition, preventive medicine, home economy, gender education), open alphabetization classes, productive workshops for women who produce soy milk and chocolates. Mothers participate in the preparation of the food and cleaning and maintenance of the school. Fathers work on the school crops and raising the farm animals.

The Community

In Guatemala, more than 50% of the people live in poverty and around 16% live in extreme poverty. Concepcion de las Lomas is the product of the expansion of the city over some rural villages, so it rural inhabitants have been incorporated to the pressures and styles of urban life.

Even though they are located close to upper class schools and universities and middle class neighborhoods,  its living conditions have deteriorated so as to become a marginal urban belt. The precarious economy of this community, based in occasional and informal work, is not enough to cover their basic necessities.

The infrastructure and services are very scarce, dirt streets, no sewers, many areas with no potable water. an many families live in very dangerous areas.
