Based in Alban, Colombia, the organization is home to more than 170 children, teenagers and adults ranging from ages 8 through 60 with psycho-social and mental disabilities. The center provides them with housing, meals, medical and psychological care, therapies, recreational activities, schooling, vocational workshops.
Fundacion Niña María is a "safe haven” to these children that experienced hardships such as abandonment, abuse, exploitation, and neglect. The main objectives of the institution are to protect their rights, giving them the chance to live in a loving environment and develop their abilities and capacities with their integral plan, caring for their physical, psychological and social well being.
The children, adolescents and adults are grouped in "homes" within the institution, depending on their level of functionality and they all take part in different activities. Some go to school, others participate of the bakery, farm and sewing workshops, they do social activities, therapies, exercise, etc.
We recently (April 2014) traveled to Colombia to inaugurate a Wellness Center the we equipped in collaboration with the Key Biscayne Rotary Club. We purchased specialized beds, a scale for wheelchairs, medical equipment, a treadmill machine, stationary bike and weight system, balls, mats and all necessary equipment to provide exercise for the residents.
